Early last year I wrote an article on the 7 best dev conferences in 2016. I had planned to do something similar at the start of this year, however, time marched on and it’s now little later than I anticipated.
Going to conferences is one of the best things you can do for your business (especially if you're just starting out). It's your chance to meet other developers, designers, people from Apple, and get to know members of the press. I'm fairly introverted, but I know going to conferences has helped me out so much over the years. I've made new friends, met with useful contacts, and had a blast while doing it.
If you do anything this year, go to at least one conference. You'll look back in a few years time and realise it was one of the best decisions you ever made for your business.
Unfortunately Úll has already been and gone, and the tickets for WWDC been assigned. However, all is not lost. There's still plenty of other great conferences worth attending. I'd also recommend picking just one or two conferences to attend each year. Pick the ones that you think you'll get the most out of. For me personally, I find any more than two and it starts to become a bit of a chore.
1. Úll Conf
Úll is a conference for people who build and love great products. They focus on great product stories, presented through an Apple-shaped lens.
Unfortunately, this conference has already been and gone, but it's definitely one to keep an eye on for next year.
Dates: 10th – 11th April 2017
Location: Killarney, Ireland
UIKonf is a conference for serious iOS developers. It features inspiring speakers giving talks on cutting edge topics in iOS development, mobile design, and business.
If you're interested in attending you should get yourself organised as it's happening in just a few weeks time!
Dates: 14th – 17th May 2017
Location: Kosmos, Berlin
3. WWDC / AltConf /Layers
This year WWDC is in San Jose, as opposed to San Francisco. Due to a move in location it should make for a very exciting year to attend.
If you're going this year, you should check out my guide to WWDC. It's obviously out of date now due to the new location, but if you've never been before it's still worth reading to give you an idea of what to expect.
Dates: 5th – 9th June 2017
Location: San Jose
iOSDevUK is the UK's biggest conference for iOS developers. The emphasis is on affordability, useful content, and community. I've never attended, but it really does look like a great conference.
Dates: 4th – 7th September 2017
Location: Aberystwyth, Wales
5. Release Notes
If you're trying to making a living from indie software development then I think you'll probably be able to relate to the tag line for this years Release Note Conference — "Adapt. Persist. Succeed.
I had made plans to go to Release Notes for the last few years, but other things got in the way. This year I've managed to pick-up a ticket, to say I'm excited is an understatement.
Around the same time as the conference there's also going to be live recording of Relay FM's Connected. Do let me know if you're going to be at Release Notes or the live recording as it'd be great to meet-up and say hi.
Event: Release Notes
Dates: 16th – 18th October 2017
What did I Miss?
As far as I know these are the biggest and best iOS/Mac conferences you can attend. If you know of any other great conferences going on this year please let me know in the comments below.
