Apple Should Release Bigger iPads

If Apple wants the iPad to start making serious inroads into the pro market, and I believe they do, then they are going to need to release even bigger iPads. That may sound crazy, but hear me out.

For starters, I’d like to see an iPad around the 15-inch mark, akin to the MacBook Pro. Hell, maybe even 17 to 20-inch versions. If you spend a large amount of time working at a desk you don’t need a system to be super portable, you just need more screen real estate and more power.

If we ignore the fact that iOS is holding back the iPad platform right now, then pairing a keyboard with a bigger iPad would be excellent for developers. I can easily see myself using it to develop web sites on with a text editor on one side and Safari on the other side.

If you paired an Apple Pencil with an even larger iPad you would start to see even more potential. In the late 90’s I worked as a high-end photo retoucher, back then we used A2 Wacom tablets and huge workstation PC's, but the funny thing is not much has changed, people still use this setup for high-end work. However, I could easily see this profession (and photographers) switching over to an iPad-only workflow providing Apple release bigger iPads, along with improving iOS.

Having a 15-inch or larger canvas to edit and retouch photos on with an Apple Pencil would be amazing. This is just one example of many professions that could take advantage of all that extra screen real estate. The 12.9-inch iPad is great, but it’s still not big enough in my opinion.

As I’ve mentioned recently, apps on iOS often feel hobbled because of the way files are siloed on a per app basis. If Apple fixes these sandboxing issues and starts releasing bigger iPad’s then I believe the floodgates will open. More professionals that previously shunned working on iOS full time will move over to an iPad-centric workflow.

And just for the record, I think this is exactly where Apple is headed with the iPad.
