There’s nothing like the promise of a fresh new year to kick-start some challenges. So rather than setting out some New Years resolutions that will probably fail far too soon, I’ve decided to do a few challenges for January instead. It’s just 30 days. How hard can it be?
I want to get my general fitness level up. I also have a lofty goal of writing a few books, so getting into the habit of writing more often will get me closer to that goal.
I’m making these three goals public to hold myself a little more accountable, as there’s nothing quite like the fear of failure or public shame to spur someone on.
1. Run every day
I’ve decided to run every day for the next 30 days. The rules are simple. Run every day for at least 30 minutes. It doesn’t matter how far or fast. I just need to get outside with my trainers on for 30 minutes.
I tried this challenge some years ago. Unfortunately, I was two weeks in and got a cold, which threw the whole thing off. Hopefully, this time will be different.
2. Write every day
I’m also going to be writing every day for the next 30 days. It’ll be the same rules as running; write every day for at least 30 minutes. It doesn’t matter how much I get done in that time. I just need to write. I think this will be the easiest of the three challenges.
I won’t be publishing new posts every day, but I should be publishing more articles if it goes well. And who knows, maybe I’ll be able to make a start on one of the numerous books I’ve been meaning to write for the past five years.
3. The 2-Minute Plank Challenge
This bonus challenge seemed like a fun thing to add to the mix. I was inspired after reading Darshak Rana’s post on doing the 30-day Plank Challenge and now seemed like the perfect time.
So, every day in January, I’ll aim to do a “Plank” for two minutes. I tried to do one today and got to around 1 minute. Hopefully, by the end of January, my core will be feeling a lot stronger, and two minutes will be a breeze.
I’ll write an update with details on how each challenge went in February.
